Science Fair

Recently at school we have created fair tests for our school science fair.
Some of the ideas are; the good old mentos and coke, mould experiments.
The winners get to go to Timaru for the regional finals. At the finals we could win prizes of up to $100.

Life Education

For two weeks, we have the life education bus here at school. The year 7 program is ‘Warrant of Fitness’ and the year 8 program is ‘From the Shadows’. In Warrant of Fitness, the year sevens learn about eating healthy, keeping fit and learning about their bodies’ needs. They will sing songs, watch videos and play games in the life education bus. In From the Shadows the year eight’s will learn about drugs, and what they do to our body. They will also learn about the seven steps to adulthood.

Many of our Year 8s have been training as Peer Mediators. OIS is a Cool School. Mrs Hay has been training us and getting us ready to be active mediators in the playground.

My Two Years at OIS.

Over my past couple of years at OIS I have had an awesome time making friends, loading my brain with new knowledge and playing my favourite sports with other team mates and schools.

At OIS we are given a choice to play an instrument, we have some of the top range musicians and instructors here; there are many instruments we are given choices to play from drums or guitar to saxophone or violin and they all have amazing instructors.

Having such a friendly environment here, means that I have made heaps of new friends and I get around well with everyone.

We are also given lots of opportunities like Bloggers (OIS students update the school Blog with all the important things happening around the school), extension maths, art, fabric and hard materials (wood work).

We have two fundraisers, the chocolate sales and the spellerama, the chocolate sales are when each student is given a box of chocolates to sell worth $2 per bar and 20 bars ($40 dollars per person).Each box we sell we go into the draw to win cool prizes like I-pods or televisions .And the spellerama is when we are given two weeks to practice spelling words on our list and are tested 50 words. Per word we get right we raise 5 cents and the more sponsors we get the more money we raise. Just like the chocolate sales we go into the draw to win prizes for each card we sell.

The money we raise goes towards things like the new canteen, the lunch seats, the challenge course and other things that us students will benefit from.

In the summer each class goes swimming at least twice a week in the school pool with brand new solar heating (raised by our fundraising) we are divided into groups of our ability and are given lessons or tasks.

Every second year James Hargest college from Invercargill come down to Oamaru to have an interschool with us and billet with students from OIS, On the other years we go down to Invercargill and stay with people from there school.

We are given chances to play sports like rugby netball hockey soccer and almost any sports you can think of we currently hold the rugby title. This interschool helps us make friends with people from Invercargill and meet up with them the year after.

In year 8 camp is really exciting and we look forward to it all year, as we are given the choice to go to either, Mt Somers, Stewart Island, Wainui or Dunedin these camps are all great and we are having camp season right now, Stewart Island is away and the rest have been.

We welcome any newcomers to our school and I highly recommend it.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

During this term at O.I.S. we are doing a unit on Keeping Ourselves Safe which teaches us children about safety and laws. Year 7s and 8s do this unit including videos re-enacted to form scenarios, booklets that let the class know what to do and what other people have done in the same scenario. The idea of this unit is to reinforce the children’s knowledge and keep them on the right track.

OIS year 7 art!!

Throughout the last 4 weeks some selected year 7s got to make a David Hockney project.
The project is made by taking photos and mixing them up a little bit to produce a wonderful peice of art.
We have taken some photos of these projects and posted them just beneth this article.

Kids Voting

Voting is what over 18 yr olds usually do but this week we kids got to vote.
Voting was hard because we didn’t know who to vote for but also fun cause it was the first time we had voted.
Our votes won’t count in the real election but in the school elections it will.
All the schools in New Zealand will vote who they think should win and in the end they will count them all up and tell everybody who we kids think who should win.
It was great fun and I am looking forwards to doing it for real in the future.

Summer Sport 08

It is yet another year of summer sport at Oamaru Intermediate, we are all happy to be able to get on to the field in the warm summer breeze.
This year Oamaru Intermediate is offering Softball, Hockey, Touch Rugby and Tennis, plus helping others to get into sport around the community.
Every year more and more Oamaru kids are getting out there and are participating in the sports that are offered in the summer.

Power to the people

This term our inquiry topic is Power to the people. Power to the people is related to the government, strong leaders and how they get to be leaders. For Homework we collect political propaganda related to the Elections and in class we sometimes have debates over which party is best and why. Another aspect of Power to the people is keeping ourselves safe because we have the power to protect ourselves.
